Join us for a transformative week of continuing education at Zephyr Point, where communal learning meets the power of diverse voices and lived experiences. Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of Lake Tahoe, this week stirs embers of inspiration and possibility, enlivening participants with renewed purpose and practical tools to carry forward. Each week is curated with a unique theme and purpose, inviting leaders, educators, pastors, and the curious to come together for collaborative discussions and engaging activities.

This fall our Continuing Education Institute is in collaboration with NEXT CHURCH.

NEXT Church is a nonprofit network and community of Christian leaders rooted in the mainline Protestant tradition that seeks to support and shape the unfolding future of the Church. It brings together pastors, educators, church members, and other church leaders to cultivate relationships, develop courageous and effective leadership, and accompany congregations in curating justice, wholeness, and transformation in their communities. Through gatherings, coaching, and collaborative learning, NEXT Church emphasizes personal and communal growth as the foundation for systemic change, believing that transformed individuals and healthy communities can embody God’s work for the common good in a changing cultural and church landscape.

Leading Change and Transformation
Creating the Conditions for Faithful Intentions to be Discerned, Evaluated, and Thrive

Our churches and communities have been in an accelerated period of transformation and change over the past decade. The vitality, sustainability, and purpose of the Church is a critical question for faith leaders today. Now, more than ever, our communities need faithful expressions of justice, liberation, and love. But how do we know if our well-meaning actions and offerings are making a difference?

The traditional metrics of budgets, membership, and attendance are no longer adequate to evaluate success in ministry. Instead of searching for new ways of measuring, we revert to what we know, perpetuating a status quo. But, if what we are doing matters in our lives and in the world, we must develop meaningful ways to measure effectiveness. We need to change the entire culture of assessment.

Aligning our good intentions with transformational impact is critical for faithful witness and work. This retreat will give you practical tools to unpack the needs of your community, honestly assess your resources, and imagine ways ministries and programs can be more effective for those we serve. The retreat is designed for all church leaders – pastors, educators, elders, lay leaders, and church professionals.
Facilitators:
Larissa Kwong Abazia (she/her) is the Executive Director of NEXT Church and the founder of Courageous Spaces, inviting others to co-create spaces for disruption, transformation, and change. Her work in the Church seeks to create spaces of equity by seeking flourishing and wholeness. She has served at all levels of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.): Vice Moderator of the 221st General Assembly, the General Assembly Committee on Representation, and in congregations located in Chicago (IL), Queens (NY), Greenwich (CT), and throughout New Jersey. She is an ACC credentialed coaching through the International Coach Federation and a Qualified Administrator of the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), an assessment measuring cross-cultural, intercultural competency. When she’s not doing “church-y things,” Larissa enjoys time with her family, making/eating delicious foods, and exploring new spaces and places.

Jen James (she/her) is on staff for NEXT Church as the Director of Programs and Operations. She is a facilitator, trained coach, and educator who loves working with congregations to help church leaders assess, realign, and strategically transform ministries. Jen was on the original writing team for Cultivated Ministry and was a co-writer for the Updated Edition. She has led workshops across the country on Cultivated Ministry since its release in 2018. Jen holds a Master of Divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington. DC and will gladly tell you she went to seminary because she loves learning, not to be a pastor like everyone else!
When she’s not working in the church world, Jen is offering unsolicited political commentary, cheering on her twin boys at the pool or baseball/soccer fields, and conjuring up a new house project with her husband who is a finance entrepreneur and Methodist pastor.

Coaches:
Chip Low (he/him) is concurrently an ordained Presbyterian minister and professional coach. He’s served 15 years as the 20th pastor/co-pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown Heights, NY, an almost 300 year-old church in the Hudson Valley. Chip is a Master Certified Coach with an Advanced Certification in Team Coaching. Chip coaches individuals and teams in a variety of on purpose, vision, mission, and strategy; change and transition; organizational change and leadership development. Through Loaves & Fishes Coach Training he trains and mentors people to become certified coaches and grow their coaching skills. Chip and his wife, Tami, enjoy the musical talents of their three children and organize pilgrimages on the Camino and in Scotland including time on the Isle of Iona. Chip spends time exploring the wonders of creation, hiking and pilgrimages, cycling and yoga, and drinking coffee and scotch.

As a bestselling author, speaker, preacher, and executive coach, Shani McIlwain (she/her) doesn’t just talk about change—she embodies it. Whether she’s leading tough conversations on race and equity, guiding faith communities toward liberation, or sharing her own unfiltered journey, she brings light, laughter, and a deep commitment to justice. A Ruling Elder at Faith Presbyterian Church in Washington, DC, and former Moderator of the National Capital Presbytery, she challenges outdated norms and helps individuals and institutions dismantle oppressive systems—one conversation at a time. Shani is an International Coach Federation trained coach and has almost completed her Associate Coach Certification (ACC). She is also a certified mentor for Dialog for Peaceful Change. When she’s not writing, speaking, or coaching, you’ll find her embracing life with the same energy she brings to the stage: sharing love, light, and life, amplifying voices, attending every social engagement because she’s an enneagram 7, eating good pizza, posting on social media, or loving and learning from her four humans who call her mom.
